NEEDLE EXCHANGE PROGRAMS/SYRINGE EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
Needle exchange programs and needle exchange vans allow injection drug users to trade in used syringes and get sterile syringes in return to prevent the spread of the HIV virus and other blood-borne diseases such as Hepatitis B and C.
Other services provided by needle exchange programs include confidential, anonymous testing for HIV antibodies, HIV/AIDS prevention education and materials, and referrals for drug and health treatment services.
Connecticut has four needle exchange programs:
- AIDS Connecticut
- Aids Project - Greater Danbury
- Bridgeport, City of – Health Department
- New Haven, City of – Health Department
