WHAT IS CONNECTICUT’S STALKING LAW?

There are three degrees of stalking defined in Connecticut’s stalking law:

  • Stalking in the third degree (Class B misdemeanor) is when a person "…recklessly causes another person to reasonably fear for his physical safety by wilfully and repeatedly following or lying in wait for such other person."
  • Stalking in the second degree (Class A misdemeanor) is when a person "…with intent to cause another person to fear for his physical safety, he wilfully and repeatedly follows or lies in wait for such other person and causes such other person to reasonably fear for his physical safety."
  • Stalking in the first degree (Class D felony) is when a person commits stalking in the second degree AND was previously convicted of stalking in the second or first degree, OR his conduct violates a court order in effect at the time of the offense, OR the person who was stalked is under sixteen years of age.

IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING STALKED

If you think you or your child is being stalked, call the police, the domestic violence hotline, or the sexual assault hotline immediately.
