SUBSIDIZED RENTAL HOUSING - ELDERLY
PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development administers subsidized elderly housing through local housing authorities or local housing development/management agencies.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Subsidized elderly housing is for older people whose health and physical mobility enable them to live independently with minimal assistance. Subsidized elderly housing is usually open to older people who are at least 62 years old with income at or below 80% of the median income for the area they live in. (Some housing sites accept people aged 55 and up). Qualified residents usually pay no more than 30% of their income as rent when living in subsidized housing. Some subsidized elderly housing is owned and/or operated by private nonprofit organizations that receive government grants or loans to develop housing. Other subsidized elderly housing, usually known as low-income public housing, is owned and operated by local housing authorities.
COST: Rent varies, but is usually no more than 30% of income.
