CHARITY REGISTRATION

WHO MUST REGISTER A CHARITY

The following is summarized from the website of the Public Charities Information Unit of the Connecticut State Department of Consumer Protection: http://www.ct.gov/dcp/cwp/view.asp?a=1654&q=274418&dcpNav=|

The Connecticut Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act, which is administered by the state Public Charities Information Unit, states that any organization that solicits contributions in Connecticut for charitable purposes must register prior to the commencement of solicitations. This includes requests made for financial donations or other types of support. Organizations that do not do public fundraising, but raise support through other means such as soliciting grants from corporations or foundations, must also register as charitable organizations. In addition, paid soliciting firms hired by charities are also required to register, file a notice of each upcoming solicitation campaign, and submit a post-campaign financial report.

WHO IS EXEMPT FROM REGISTRATION

The Act exempts from registration certain types of organizations, such as educational institutions, nonprofit hospitals licensed by Connecticut, Connecticut and United States government units, and religious institutions. Contact the Public Charities Information Unit for further detailed information about organizations that are qualified for exemption from registration.

HOW TO REGISTER AN ORGANIZATION:

To register, submit a Charitable Organization Registration Application - Form PCUREG-01 (http://www.ct.gov/dcp/lib/dcp/pdf/forms/initial_charity_application2011.pdf) along with an annual $50 registration fee to the Public Charities Information Unit at the Connecticut State Department of Consumer Protection. As of October 1, 2005, charity registrations are effective for one year and will expire, if not renewed. Renewal applications will automatically be mailed to organizations that are already registered.
