WHAT IS DISCRIMINATION:
In Connecticut, it is illegal to
discriminate in:
- Employment
- Housing
- Public accommodations
- Credit transactions
on the basis of:
- Age
- Ancestry
- Color
- Learning disability
- Marital status
- Developmental disability
- National origin
- Physical disability
- Race
- Religious creed
- Sex (including pregnancy)
- Sexual orientation
ALSO
- It is illegal to discriminate
in employment on the basis of genetic
information or mental disorder.
- It is illegal to discriminate
in housing and public accommodations
based on a lawful source of income, mental
disability, use and/or training of a guide
dog, family status (housing only), and
breastfeeding (public accommodations only).
HOW TO FILE A COMPLAINT:
People who want to file a
discrimination complaint should contact an
intake officer at the Connecticut
Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities
regional office that covers the town in which
the discrimination took place.
Exception: All housing
complaints are taken by the Commission’s Fair
Housing Unit in Hartford.
Complaints must generally be filed
within 180 days of the date of the alleged act
of discrimination or within 180 days of the date
that you became aware of the act. Complaints
must be in writing and under oath. The written
complaint must be entered into the Commission
records before the 180 day time frame expires.
No email or document received by facsimile is
acceptable. The original complaint affidavit
document must be received in a Commission
office.
