GAS SAVING SCAMS
BEWARE OF SCAMS
As gasoline prices in Connecticut and other
states rise, consumers are looking for ways to
improve the gas mileage in their motor vehicles.
However, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
advises consumers to be wary of products that
claim their product is able to significantly
improve a car’s fuel economy, can give a car
extra miles per gallon, or is approved by the
federal government. Further information on
gas-saving scams and false advertising can be
found at the FTC website: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/autos/aut10.pdf
Also, the Better Business Bureau
(BBB) of Connecticut recommends checking with
your auto mechanic before adding any fuel saving
devices or products to your car’s engine since
it may void the manufacturer’s warranty and
could cause serious engine problems.
HOW DO I OBTAIN A REFUND OR
REGISTER A COMPLAINT?
If you’re not happy about a product, contact
the manufacturer to request a refund. Some
companies may offer a money-back guarantee. If
you’re not satisfied with the manufacturer’s
response, contact the Better Business Bureau
(BBB) of Connecticut or the State of Connecticut
Department of Consumer Protection (DCP)
to register a formal complaint.
Note: To send a gasoline complaint to
DCP, email: dcp.foodandstandards@ct.gov
and include the gasoline station name, town, price
and any other pertinent information related to
your complaint.
