WHAT IS A LOCKOUT?
A lockout is when a landlord attempts to
prevent a tenant from accessing his/her
apartment, without a court order. A landlord
might do this by changing the locks, or using
other means to block the entrances to the
apartment. Under Connecticut
General Statutes, Section 53a-214, this is
known as a criminal lockout, and it is a Class C
Misdemeanor.
For more information on the
issues involved in a criminal lockout, see the
brochure “Tenants
Rights: Lockouts”, by the Legal Assistance
Resource Center of Connecticut.
