STATE SMOKING QUITLINES
QUITLINES AND SMOKING
CESSATION PROGRAMS
Smokers who want to quit smoking can find help
in smoking cessation programs held in settings
such as hospitals, health centers and counseling
agencies. These programs may use a variety of
techniques including aversion therapy, hypnosis,
acupuncture, acupressure and individual and/or
group therapy or mutual support groups to help
people give up cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco,
chewing tobacco, snuff or other substances
containing nicotine. There are also Quitline
programs run in each state that provide smokers
with resources to help them quit their smoking
habits. Connecticut Quitline is an example of
one such program.
CONNECTICUT QUITLINE
Connecticut Quitline is a smoking cessation
telephone service that provides information and
counseling about tobacco use. Callers can phone
(866) 363-4224 (866-END-HABIT) Monday-Sunday:
8am-3am. Written materials are also sent to
callers, based on their readiness to quit.
Separate materials are available for pregnant
women who wish to quit smoking. Callers who are
ready to quit smoking and are interested in
further telephone based service will receive up
to 5 telephone counseling sessions and a Quit
Kit containing informational and supportive
materials that help deal with the effects of
smoking cessation. Connecticut Quitline is
funded by the Connecticut Department of Public
Health and administered by Alere Wellbeing, a
commercial tobacco treatment provider.

Outside of Connecticut, similar smoking
cessation programs can be found in other states.
Smokefree.gov (http://smokefree.gov/),
a website created by the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), has a map guide to locating
local phone numbers and websites for each
state’s program. The website also contains NCI’s
national telephone quitline and instant
messaging service, a step-by-step smoking
cessation guide and downloadable publications.
